About


Taikan Yamasaki completed his studies at the Tokyo College of Music with Atsushi Sugahara, Momoko Kamiya, Shoichi Kubo, and Hidemi Murase and won second prize at the 34th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition in the marimba category in 2018.Since 2019 he has been studying percussion at the MDW with Josef Gumpinger with additional studies in drum set (with Anton Müllhofer), orchestral practice (with Benjamin Schmidinger), marimba (with Emiko Thiele) and percussion/ensemble (with David Christopher Panzl).He is a substitute in the RSO Vienna, the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker, the Vienna Concert Association, the Imperial Philharmonic, the Ensemble Kontrapunkt, the Ensemble Platypus, the Ensemble N, and for the Neue Oper Vienna.In the ISA (International Summer Academy) program of the MDW in the “New and Early Music” section in 2022, he appeared as a soloist with Ma’mounia by Heinz Holliger with the Ensemble Fractales (director: Jean-Bernard Matter).At the Wien Modern 2023 festival in the program “Ligeti 100.2” he played solo percussion in the double concerto by Unsuk-Chin with Panagotis Nikitaris on solo piano and the Webern Ensemble (conductor: Jean-Bernard Matter).Taikan Yamasaki is a permanent member of Ensemble XXI. Century and a founding member of Argo Collective – Ensemble for New Music.In the 2023–2024 season, Taikan Yamasaki is a scholarship holder of the Anny Felbermayer Fund.
